Letters about slave purchases surface.

If the North invaded the South just to free slaves, why didn’t they just purchased all the slaves for a fraction of the cost?

New letters from Abraham Lincoln have surfaced that detail efforts to avoid Civil War by purchasing slaves.

The letters detail a “gradual emancipation,” in which all the slaves in Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri would be freed first. The cost to the US government would by the same expense as fighting the war for 87 days.

Lincoln’s War cost 650,000 lives and dramatically expanded the powers of the Federal Government.
