Frank “Rebel” Mundy, NASCAR Pioneer, Dies

Frank Mundy, a legendary stock car race champion and a founder of NASCAR , died earlier this month from natural causes in Atlanta. He was 90.

Born Francisco Eduardo Melendez in Atlanta and raised in an orphanage, Mundy changed his name when he began racing and added the nickname “The Rebel.” He split with NASCAR co-founder Bill France, Sr. in 1952 and switched to the American Automobile Association (AAA) circuit.  In 1954, Mundy won the AAA Championship driving a Hudson Hornet.  (See photo)
