Pentagon wants to put 400,000 reserve troops in American cities with President Obama given sole discretion as to how they can and will be used.
Pentagon officials have set off a fury of protests from America’s governors with a proposal that 400,000 US troops be scattered across the United States. The reason for these troops is purposely vague. They will be used in case of “emergency” or “major disaster.” Whatever that is supposed to mean.
Here is the catch. According to the Pentagon, President Obama would have “sole discretion to designate an event as an emergency or major disaster.”
Congress must approve of the plan, because it would be a gross violation of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878.
Commentators on both sides of the political spectrum are expressing shock over the proposal.
